The Curb

Short film by

Maya Ousachi

For my film class, our first assignment was to create a story that revolves around a certain emotion. I wanted to challenge myself to not rely on dialogue and see where it goes. This was my first go at creating a short film and everything that entails: Shot list, directing, acting, etc. It gave me a new respect for what goes into the aspects of film that I haven't had much experience with, and I've been creating and collaborating ever since!

My Brother's Cigarette

Short film by Maya Ousachi

With this original short film of mine,  I wanted to capture the exploration of grief, memory, and the complicated bonds between siblings. What happens when an echo of the past pays a visit just as you are finally learning to move on? The siblings engage in an emotional conversation that uncovers their shared memories, unspoken pain, and unresolved emotions. Through humor, anger, and vulnerability, they confront the aftermath of unresolved family issues. As the conversation deepens, Charlie is forced to face difficult truths about herself, her brother, and the journey of moving forward. What gives us the strength to let go?

Half of Me

Play by Maya Ousachi

One of my favorite Carnegie Mellon opportunities is Playground. This festival gives its Drama students the opportunity to submit and put on original works. When my piece was chosen this year, I was absolutely over the moon. This original play examines the journey of self-discovery in the face of familial conflict and growing up. Through the lens of a complex parent-child relationship, it explores the complexities of identity, adolescence, and healing. Inspired by the idea that our lives are interconnected, this speaks to our shared humanity. We all go through experiences that leave a mark on us - some beautiful, some painful, some transformative. It's what we take from these moments that shape who we are. I wanted the audience to go home after watching having the opportunity to reflect, confront vulnerability, embrace empathy, and leave with a sense of shared humanity.
